New Fuels and Cookstoves can impact lives and climate change!

The use of gathered wood for cooking fires in the third world is a major contributor to Global Warming and medical problems in villages worldwide. In addition, the need for large quantities of wood consumes many hours of children’s time when they should be in school and leads to accelerated deforestation.  Eventually solar cook stoves will help alleviate this problem but an immediate solution can be found with new methods of producing alternative fuels combined with efficient cook stoves. Various companies are now offering programs where efficient cook stoves are provided free of charge in exchange for the natives providing dead wood, plant and food waste and palm fronds for compaction, dewatering and forming into high density pellets or green charcoal for use in the stoves. Natives are giving credit for the waste material provided and pay a monthly fee for the fuel.

An intermediate industry is developed where the machinery for processing the fuel is financed for the village cooperatives and the loans are paid back over a number of years. The overall scheme provides a number of intermediate salaried jobs in the processing and distribution of the fuel. The major elements holding back the program are sufficient up front funding for the stoves and machinery and local natives willing to step forward and run the small companies. The website www.gorillahabitat.com has been established as a vehicle to connect the necessary funding agencies, companies and village cooperatives to drive this process forward. As Carbon Offsets or Credits become more widely adopted this is an excellent program for major corporate sponsorship. Visit the web site to learn more and get involved in the dialogue.
